The Side Door Band
Sing unto the Lord; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth. Isaiah 12:5
The Side Door Band plays at the contemporary worship service at Ginter Park UMC every Sunday morning at 9:30. They are a blend of performers that come from different backgrounds in music. Although most of the music they play has been written and recorded by other artists such as Paul Baloche, Chris Rice, Jeremy Camp and Casting Crowns, to name a few, the members of the band like to put their own spice into the recipe to create an original flavor. It is not uncommon for the group to put a funk or reggae twist on familiar praise tunes.
Tony Howard is an original member of the band. A working musician in the Richmond area, he is a group’s dream drummer because he can drive while he sings and plays. Brian Durrett, a former touring musician, plays acoustic and electric bass. It is important to him that the congregation not only hears the music, but also sees it and feels it. The energy he brings to the group is easy to see on Sunday mornings. Chris Bernardo is another veteran Richmond musician that is a great asset to the group. Playing keyboards, he always seems to add exactly what the song needs melodically and harmonically. If he were a super hero, he would be called The Embellisher. Rich Bronson plays lead guitar, sings and writes songs for the band. He would prefer it not be mentioned that he is a superb guitar player and has a powerful voice. You’ll hear his voice first, as he calls us to worship each Sunday morning. Jamey Bailey’s musical roots run deep having come from a family of jazz musicians. He plays keyboard, sings and occasionally writes a song or two for the band. Aletha Brunson sings backup vocals. She steps up to lead vocals on occasion when the spirit leads her. She has a soft compassionate voice that brings a softer feel to some of the songs we play. Allison Douthat sings lead and backup vocals. She lends her voice to songs such as "Here I am to Worship". Sam Ros is our conga player. The “son of a preacher man,” he is quite enthusiastic and is a joy to be around. He adds just the right amount of Latin flair to the musical mix. Scott Shaffer plays acoustic rhythm guitar, adding a classic rock influence to the group. Mason Taylor is our sound engineer. He is blessed with a great deal of patience, and works hard to keep the sounds you hear crisp, clear and well mixed.
This is an energetic group of musicians, who are eager to make music to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to our congregation and community. It is their mission to inspire our parishioners to get their praise on!
Do you have a song that you’d like to hear? Please speak with one of the band members and let them know what we can do to make your worship experience more rewarding and enjoyable!
